What is Classical Pilates? A guide to the original method.
Walk into many Pilates studios today and you’ll probably find darkened rooms, upbeat playlists, fast-paced classes and rows of Reformers moving in perfect sync. There’s absolutely a place for many different styles of movement. But this isn’t where Pilates began.
Long before Pilates became a fitness trend, Joseph Pilates created something much bigger than a workout. He developed a complete movement system called Contrology – a method built on intelligent, purposeful movement that has stood the test of time for almost a century. At Exhale, that’s the method we’ve chosen to preserve.

So what is Classical Pilates?
Classical Pilates is the original system created by Joseph Pilates. Rather than being a collection of individual exercises, it’s a carefully designed method where every movement has a purpose. Each exercise prepares your body for the next, allowing you to build confidence, control and understanding as you progress. As our Founder, Gaby Noble, often says:“Classical Pilates focuses on building strong foundations. As your understanding and strength develop, you begin to move through the exercises with greater flow and confidence”.
That’s one of the things we love most about the method – it meets you exactly where you are and grows with you.
How is Classical Pilates different?
One of the questions we’re asked most often is “what’s the difference between Classical and Contemporary Pilates?”
While contemporary Pilates has evolved over time, often incorporating influences from physiotherapy and modern fitness, Classical Pilates stays true to Joseph Pilates’ original system. At Exhale, that means teaching the original exercises, the original sequences and the full range of apparatus exactly as they were designed to work together.
- The sequence matters: In Classical Pilates, the order of the exercises is never random. Each movement prepares you for the next, creating a natural progression that allows your practice to develop over time. Rather than constantly introducing new exercises, the method encourages you to deepen your understanding of the ones already there.
- We teach without music: One of the first things people notice when they visit Exhale is how calm the studio feels. There’s no playlist or countdown – just your teacher’s voice, your breath and the rhythm of the springs. Without distractions, it’s easier to concentrate, connect with your body and fully immerse yourself in the practice. It’s a quieter experience, but one many of our clients come to value most.
- It’s about more than the Reformer: The Reformer may be the best-known piece of Pilates equipment, but it’s only one part of the story. Joseph Pilates designed an entire family of apparatus- including the Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Tower, High Chair, Barrels, Pedi Pole and Neck Stretcher. Each piece offers a different challenge, and together they create one beautifully connected system.
Is Classical Pilates for everyone?
Absolutely.
One of the biggest misconceptions about Pilates is that it’s only for dancers, women or people who are already flexible. In reality, Joseph Pilates designed his method for everybody. At Exhale, our clients include complete beginners, professional athletes, performers, busy parents, executives and older adults who simply want to keep moving well throughout life. Wherever you’re starting from, the method can be adapted to support you safely, intelligently and at your own pace.
More than exercise
For many people, the greatest surprise isn’t just how they feel physically- it’s how they feel mentally. In a world that’s constantly demanding our attention, Classical Pilates offers something wonderfully simple: an hour to slow down and focus. Without music or distractions, your attention naturally turns inwards. You begin to notice your breathing, your posture and the quality of your movement.
Many clients leave feeling calmer, more balanced and more connected to their bodies than when they arrived. As one journalist wrote after spending a month practising at Exhale:“my workouts felt measured and controlled, and I knew I would leave each session having done something good for my body and my mind”.
Beyond the Reformer
If you’ve only experienced Reformer Pilates, there’s a whole world still to discover. Every piece of Classical Pilates apparatus has its own purpose, and together they create the complete system Joseph Pilates originally envisioned. In our next blog, we’ll introduce you to each piece of equipment – from the Cadillac to the Wunda Chair – and explore why everyone has an important role to play.
Why Exhale?
At Exhale, preserving Classical Pilates isn’t about looking backwards. It’s about sharing a method we know works, exactly as it was intended. That’s why our studios are fully equipped with the complete Classical apparatus, our teachers undergo comprehensive training, and every class is taught with care, precision and respect for the original method.
Whether you’re discovering Pilates for the first time or returning to its roots, we’d love to welcome you into the studio and help you experience Classical Pilates for yourself.
